Data Recording Requirements AS9102 Rev C requires that inspection results be recorded in quantitative terms (variable data) whenever a design characteristic is expressed by numerical limits. Using terms like "acknowledge" is generally not acceptable because it does not provide objective evidence of conformance to the specific requirement. For characteristics with numerical tolerances, Link recommends recording the actual measured value to the same level of accuracy as the drawing. This provides the necessary data for process capability analysis and ensures compliance with the standard's preference for variable data. When to Use Attribute Data Attribute data, such as "Pass/Fail" or "Accept," is only permitted in specific scenarios under AS9102: - When no inspection technique resulting in variable data is feasible. - When the design characteristic does not specify numerical limits (e.g., "Break all sharp edges"). - When qualified tooling, such as a go/no-go gauge or radius gauge, is used for verification. Even when using attribute data, if a laboratory report or certificate of test is referenced, the results should reflect that the specific values met the requirements. A verified aerospace quality expert suggests that if a process requires verification, a statement of conformance like "Accept" is appropriate, but the specific reference number for the certification must be recorded [B.6]. Practical Recommendation Avoid "acknowledge" as it is ambiguous. If the characteristic is a
